Ask for free dirt: post where you need it and how much, and contractors with dirt to dump can find you. They save a dump fee and a longer haul, so it works for both sides.

Is free dirt worth it?

• Check what it is and that it is clean before it is dumped on your site. Getting rid of bad fill costs more than buying good fill.
• Count the trucking. At about 12 cubic yards per tandem load, a short haul is what makes free dirt cheap.
• Make sure trucks can get in, turn around and dump where you want it.
