Cut-and-Fill Balance: When to Haul vs. Stockpile On Site
Site Work · May 21, 2026 · 9 min read
Balanced cut-and-fill is the cheapest dirt - until it is not. Wet weather, small sites, and phasing can make a stockpile cheaper than haul-off for three weeks, then more expensive than export once it blocks work. The decision is weekly, not once at bid. When the balance tips to export or import, Jobsite Exchange helps earthwork supers post surplus dirt and find nearby import jobs on the Dirt Board.
Export exceeds what you can use on site? Post surplus on the Dirt Board with bank or loose yards and material type - brokers match commercial export to nearby import. Post a listing
For Earthwork Superintendents
Walk the mass haul every Monday. If the pile sits outside the next phase footprint and will not be used in ten days, haul. If fill is needed on the other side of the pad in five days, stockpile and stripe haul roads now.
- Track swell and shrink - bank yards in the cut are not loose yards in the truck
- Separate unsuitable material early; do not poison a good stockpile
- Water and compact stockpiles if dust or erosion triggers neighbor complaints
For Grading Contractors
Your production rate assumes material within reach of the scrapers. Double handling is a line item someone should pay for. If the engineer moves finished grade, re-run the balance before you move the pile twice.
For Civil Engineers Reviewing Mass Haul
Sign off on temporary stockpile locations for bearing and drainage. Export/import quantities on the plan should include topsoil strip, unsuitable removal, and structural fill - not just net pad balance. Flag when the contractor's field balance diverges from the diagram.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Stockpiling in the stormwater basin
- Assuming balance means zero haul cost on phased projects
- No agreement on who pays when the owner adds scope mid-cut
When export exceeds on-site use, post surplus on the Dirt Board. When you need import, list need-dirt with quantity and spec so brokers can match a nearby commercial export.
