Clean Fill vs. Contaminated Soil: What to Document Before You Haul
Dirt & Fill · Jun 8, 2026 · 10 min read
A load of dirt rejected at the gate is expensive twice - once for the round trip, once for the delay. Clean fill and contaminated soil are separated by testing, chain-of-custody, and what the receiving facility will sign for. Document before you haul, not after a driver is turned away. When material is cleared for reuse, Jobsite Exchange helps excavation crews post classified export so brokers and GCs can find it - you still vet every party yourself.
Approved for reuse as fill? Post clean export on the Dirt Board with your classification notes - GCs and brokers vet material themselves before any haul moves. Post a listing
For Excavation Crews
Know the site history before you cut. Former gas stations, dry cleaners, and industrial pads can produce spoils that look like ordinary clay. If the owner or engineer flags environmental review, segregate suspect material at the cut and do not blend it into clean stockpiles.
- Keep export and import piles physically separated and labeled
- Photograph loads and tickets at the scale - same discipline as safety logs
- Never accept "haul it and we will test later" on a commercial export
For Environmental Consultants
Your letter or soil management plan is what landfills and fill sites read. Specify analytical parameters, depth of concern, and whether material qualifies as inert fill, industrial byproduct, or regulated waste. Contractors hauling on your sign-off still need copies in the truck.
For Landfill and Transfer-Station Acceptance
Each facility has its own waste profile and daily limits. Call ahead with material type, approximate tonnage, and generator location. Some sites require 24-hour notice for large commercial loads. Rejection usually means the generator pays redelivery - price that risk in the bid.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Using residential clean-fill sites for commercial export without approval
- Mixing construction debris into dirt stockpiles
- Hauling on verbal OK when the scale house needs a written profile
When material is approved for reuse as fill, post it on the Dirt Board with classification notes so dirt brokers and GCs can match import needs. Jobsite Exchange does not certify material - listings are open, and parties vet each other directly.
